In January 1991, Former Estonian Foreign Minister Lennart Meri nominated RFE/RL for the Nobel Peace Prize. In his nominating letter, Mr. Meri wrote:

“There is abundant evidence – including statements by the freely elected leaders of Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Bulgaria – that Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty have made, and continue to make a unique contribution to the rebirth of democracy in our region of the world, upon which lasting peace depends…”
