About the Service
Originally launched in 1950 and closed in 2008, Europa Liberă România was relaunched in January 2019, providing audiences with accurate and balanced coverage of key national and global news.
Entirely digital, Europa Liberă România operates from Bucharest, with reporting available through its website and on social media platforms.
Journalists provide Romanian audiences with trusted reporting on Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine, elections, governmental mismanagement of the public health system, corruption in the infrastructure industry, environmental issues, and international news.
The Service reported extensively on Romania’s controversial 2024 presidential election and allegations of a Russian influence campaign to boost pro-Russian nationalist candidate George Simion.
Journalists covered the flooding of one of Europe’s largest salt mines in Romania. The Praid mine, a major tourist draw and producer of 100,000 tons of salt a year, is now closed — raising fears about the local economy.
On the podcast SmartJob, host Adrien Ardelean and her expert guests tackle a wide range of topics, from addressing social inequality in Romania to developing robust defenses against cyberattacks.
